Complete your In The Nursery collection. At first I was curious when I heard about this In The Nursery remix project. The original material the brothers Klive and Nigel Humberstone (with the occasional help of Dolores C. on vocals) release is mostly as close to perfection as possible. Dreamlike neo-romanticism with classical elements, passionate and sometimes even a bit to ethereal for the 'real world'- the kind of music one cherishes for special moments which come not as often as this music deserves

At first I was curious when I heard about this In The Nursery remix project. The original material the brothers Klive and Nigel Humberstone (with the occasional help of Dolores C. on vocals) release is mostly as close to perfection as possible.Dreamlike neo-romanticism with classical elements, passionate and sometimes even a bit to ethereal for the 'real world'- the kind of music one cherishes for special moments which come not as often as this music deserves. The participants are mostly artists of a younger generation; Flesh Field, Assemblage 23, Ivan Lusco, Haujobb, Seize, Faith & The Muse, Chandeen, Steve Bennet, Electronicum, A_Robot who where invited by ITN. Only two fellow contemporaries, And Also The Trees and Attrition are represent. Not very obvious choices at first sight but all of them treated the originals in a very careful and respectfull manner.Justin Jones from AATT uses his trademark guitar style on "Corruption (Sister And Brother)" instead of the haunting electronic sequences, Flesh Field's Ian Ross lays a driving beat under "A Rebours (Against Nature)" as does Ivan Lusco on "El Secreto (It)" - and the beat is what most obvious has been worked on in almost all cases, Assemblage 23 get a bit housey, A_Robot and Faith & The Muse add own voices but all keep in tune with the style In The Nursery made so much their own.Attrition's pick of the secret hymn "To The Faithful" is characteristic for their dramatic style and with their version "To The Faithful (In Remembrance)" they nearly take the greatest sidestep from remix to re-interpretation only outmatched by the final drum and bass dancefloor mix of "Caprice (Levity)" by Seize.Nearly all of the tracks (with only one exception; "And Your Eyes") have been selected from albums starting in the early 90's with "L'Esprit" up to last years 'Engel' thus excluding their 80's work, but as bonus and maybe reference to their own starting point ITN include their re-interpretation of the classic Joy Division single "Love Will Tear Us Apart (Again)"- produced in the same respectful and careful vein as the remixes of their own material featuring a real drummer and an Oboe player of a Philharmonic Orchestra.Anyone looking for truly beautiful music should try to ignore the irritating Art Deco design ITN use nowadays and get this or any of the other albums (but beware; there are a lot of them, even if soundtracks, side projects and collections would be excluded). I think the fact that 'Cause + Effect' can stand up with most of them makes the remix project a great success in itself.[Reviewed for The Brain in 2002]
