Punk rock started in 1976 on New York’s Bowery, when four cretins from Queens came up with a mutant strain of blitzkrieg bubblegum. The revolution they inspired split the history of rock & roll in half. But even if punk rock began as a kind of negation - a call to stark, brutal simplicity - its musical variety and transforming emotional power was immediate and remains staggering. To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Ramones’ toweringly influential self-titled debut, we’ve compiled a list of the 40 Greatest Punk Albums of All Time. If Ramones was Year Zero for punk rock, it didn’t come.

Ah, the good 'ole Eighties! When Hardcore Punk was Hardcore Punk. When every band played the same style, but somehow no two bands sounded the same. When the message and attitude was simple and straight to the point. When diversity and creativity was still to be found on every corner. When you could pick up an album not knowing what to expect, and be pleasantly surprised. When..Whether it was really all rainbows and unicorns or it's just that only the positive aspects linger on, the truth is that listening to Fondükotze's album did evoke all the best aspects of what the scene seems to have been many moons ago.Officially it's a relatively new (founded in 2011) band from Zürich, but the members (which are from both the Swiss Confederation and Germany), have been involved in the scene in one way or the other over the years. And what a great name for a band! Without knowing anything else about them, one can discover where they're from and what their attitude is.Musically they play straight up Hardcore Punk, raw but melodic, fast and to the point. Sure they may not bring anything new to the table, but the energy and youthful enthusiasm is an inspiring breath of fresh air, and a good reminder of the times when Punk was simple, direct, uncompromising, and most of all, fun!But what I liked the most about the record is the diversity of the message. They manage to present a very good mixture of ideas, from social and political criticism to personal matters, relationships, and more, all with a healthy dose of humor. One moment they are dead serious, criticizing and challenging the Swiss national pride and values (“Fondükotze”), the next they are completely goofy (“You're my silly Girl, I'm your silly Boy”). Other topics covered are the submission and mind-numbing of the people by the media and politicians using the consumerist lifestyle of the capitalist system (“Verpissäd Oi”), the corruption and incompetence of the ruling class (“Stadion”, “Korruption”), love and relationships (“Jealousy”, “Frisur”), the system (“Welcome To Tomorrow”, “Dead End City”), sexual harassment (“Hör Uf”), social and personal issues (“Summerschal”, “Fang Aa”, “What The Fuck”) and having fun with friends (“Mir Nämäd No Eis”).And it seems this record gets better and better with every listen (sadly not making more sense)!Unfortunately, if you are not part of the local scene, you won't be able to understand much of what they are going on about, as most of the lyrics are in Züridüütsch and there are no translations provided. But the good news is that most songs are catchy and melodic with simple enough choruses (“So Blöd! So Blöd! So Blöd! So! So! So!”), so even if you don't understand their secret language, you can still have fun and (sort of) sing-along, at least on the ooohs and aaahs parts.Personally I would have preferred all the songs to be in Züridüütsch, as opposed to the ones in broken English, but with translations provided (or at least some short explanations). And another thing, since we're at the “constructive criticism” part, there's not enough “bllluuueeearrrghx”! They use it once or twice and I think it goes very well with the songs and general attitude, and wish they'd make it a Leitmotif. In conclusion, all I have to say is:Diä Fondükotze Schiibä haut mi uus dä sockä!
