Donuts is the second studio album by the American hip hop producer J Dilla, released on February 7, 2006 by Stones Throw Records. It was released on the day of his 32nd birthday and three days before his death, thus making it the final album released during J Dilla's lifetime.

J Dilla's eagerly awaited Donuts, the follow-up to 2001's Welcome 2 Detroit (released as Jay Dee), is, like its predecessor, a stark departure from the cozy-socks-and-Xbox feel of his former group, Slum Village. In fact, Dilla, if anything, is imposing a meta-rap bent on neo-soul, assaulting the senses in ways unseemly for a guy who used to work with Q-Tip. The drums, though remarkably fluid, are lighter, domineered by dense, abrasive samples that are sequenced with a sense of swing. Percussive end pieces are shorn cheese-grater sharp, then appended to sickly spliced moans.

Donuts ‎(2x12", Album, Club, Ltd, Num, RE, Cle). Stones Throw Records, Stones Throw Records. Catchy hooks and psychedelic noises follow eachother in a high pace, without the album losing it's flow. Dilla takes hiphop to a higher level. A great legacy of an extremely talented producer, that unfortunately died on a very young age. Well recommended for anyone into (instrumental) hiphop, but also a must have for lovers of Detroit house in the Andres or Moodymann style.

Album Stones Throw STH2126. Description: 2/LP and CD digipack with the "Smile" photo album cover. Vinyl purchase comes with immediate digital download. The 45s: Donuts (45 Box Set). Completed during a year in which J Dilla spent mostly in a hospital bed at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, Donuts would gain particular poignancy when, only three days after it's release, February 10, 2006, the artist passed away, losing his battle with a rare blood disease. Announced in Fall 2005, the concept of a rap album without rappers struck some as minor novelty, but Donuts would prove to transcend the rigid definitions of what a hip-hop album could be.

I love all instrumentals in this album! I bought the LP a few years ago and I am glad I did!

I was proud to find out J Dilla sampled one of the records I produced on 5 songs from this classic album. Formally Trackula now jpeezy @jpeezystudios! I owned the record label Maddgame.com. I'm OG still making records.
melody of you melody of you
Does anyone know if there is a difference between the copy with an image of his face and this one? One of the greatest albums of all time in my book.
OCARO OCARO
(mad late) there isn't any its just a difference in album art
Authis Authis
The version with Dilla smiling is a reissue. The music in the reissues are the same as the original.
Rich Vulture Rich Vulture
I bought a used copy with the donut cover, but the center labels look like the ones from https://www.discogs.com/J-Dilla-Donuts/release/2914567 with grey graphics and Time: The Donut of the Heart written across two lines on the b side. Anyone know which release that is? Is it put together from two separate releases?
Goldfury Goldfury
anyone else have side D labels on both sides of the second disc? Just trying to figure out if many were effected

WTF?? ? This pricing is ridiculous!!! . . .
Phobism Phobism
wow who the hell is paying $100 for this? you know you can still get this in record stores for like $30
Swordsong Swordsong
Sweet. Original pressings will always command premiums. So everyone just learning should get a cheap copy.
Ice_One_Guys Ice_One_Guys
The 10th anniversary release, which has the original cover, is on sale on Stones Throw for $18.
Mr.Bean Mr.Bean

Mr_TrOlOlO Mr_TrOlOlO
With the orignial cover?I only ever see the one with Jay Dee wearing the Tigers hat.
Mr_KiLLaURa Mr_KiLLaURa
Why the hell is this on sale for $100?
Karon Karon
There seem to be different pressings from the same period. I bought my copy in 2006 but the matrix runout is STH-2126 A RE I etc.
Snowskin Snowskin
Same with me. Bought when it came out and has that same matrix number.
Justie Justie
Me too- bought it week of release with the re suffix on the etch...

Anyone have a version of the 2006 LP release where the barcode is slightly different? 659457212650 instead of 659457212629?
Ral Ral
Ugh...turns out this was just a sticker on top of the original barcode. I'm an idiot.
BroWelm BroWelm
A truly beautiful piece of music from a supremely gifted producer. So many wonderful moments yet hangs together wonderfully.
Arryar Arryar
Probably favourite album of all time - finally got it on vinyl. Delicious.

Does anyone else who owns this pressing notice that there is a very low background hum in the beginning and anywhere there is a gap in the sound? My comment is strictly technical and unrelated to the impressive talent that went into the production in general.
นℕĨĈტℝ₦ นℕĨĈტℝ₦
I own that same pressing and can't say that I've ever noticed any of the issues you mentioned. Sorry.

This record Is dilla's soul. It's like he says before his death "ok from past to now I do Great things, but not what i always expect in creating music. I believed i have years to do it, but the disease Is not okay with That, so let's go"
Taun Taun
could you find the source of that quote? would love to read it
Malaris Malaris
Totally mindblowing!!!
Uylo Uylo
I Love This Original Artwork Of The First Release. Great Album Indeed.
Hellmaster Hellmaster
This is one of the greatest instrumental Hip-Hop albums ever created. From the intro (or Outro in this case) to "Welcome To The Show", J Dilla set a new standard for beatmaking and soul sampling (listen to Airworks for example). The only producers still around that can compete with Dilla on a sampling basis would be DJ Premier, Pete Rock and Madlib. Outside of them, Dilla was ahead of his time when it came down to drum patterns and sampling wild, left-field genres of music that only Madlib had been sampling since then. Peace to you Dilla, you will be greatly missed but your music and legacy in Hip-Hop will last forever.

This is a pure masterpiece, wherever you're from, whatever you listen to.. Rest In Power Jay Dee..!
Memuro Memuro
This album is hard to explain. Technical sounds yet something the casual listener could vibe too. It's awkward playing this to someone who has never heard of Jay Dee before. But what the man could do on an MPC drum machine wasn't like anything else.
Kirinaya Kirinaya
MPC is a sampler mate.
Madis Madis
Oh my God- This is a friggin Masterpiece! What a tragedy for Dilla not to be able to see how his fans are going to dig this work. This contribution to hip hop beat making is on par to what DJ Shadow did with his ground breaking Endtroducing... As the genius was the simplicity with Shadow, such genius is in the complexity with Jay Dee - A sonic mural which unfolds with calculated precision. Those 2 releases can't be farther apart in musical similarity, but it's how society will accept Dilla's piece which draws the comparison. In passing, he's unwittingly ushered in a new era for beat conductors. The bar is very high.
