Album Piano Man. Piano Man Lyrics. It's nine o'clock on a Saturday The regular crowd shuffles in There's an old man sitting next to me Making love to his tonic and gin. He says, "Son, can you play me a memory? I'm not really sure how it goes But it's sad and it's sweet and I knew it complete When I wore a younger man's clothes.

Album: Piano Man (1973). Charted: 25. Get the Sheet Music License This Song. This was inspired by Joel's experiences playing at The Executive Room, a piano bar in Los Angeles. He worked there for six months in 1972 after his first solo album, Cold Spring Harbor, tanked. The characters in the song are based on real people Joel encountered while working at The Executive Room. The "waitress practicing politics" is Elizabeth Weber, who ended up becoming his first wife when Joel married her in 1973 (they divorced in 1982).

Sing us a song you’re the piano man Sing us a song tonight Well we’re all in the mood for a melody And you’ve got us feeling alright. Now John at the bar is a friend of mine He gets me my drinks for free And he’s quick with a joke or to light up your smoke But there’s someplace that he’d rather be. He says, Bill, I believe this is killing me As a smile ran away from his face Well, I’m sure that I could be a movie star If I could get out of this place

Billy Joel's 1973 breakthrough album came after various would-be jump-starts for the multi-talented Long Islander. He'd already committed a solo debut (Cold Spring Harbor) before landing at Columbia, which issued Piano Man to AM and FM radio acclaim. Joel's sound would prove to be an appealing tonic to fans of Elton John and James Taylor, who'd already broken the singer-songwriter sweepstakes open
