Listen to Tierbeobachtungen by Jan Jelinek on Deezer.

There's a tendency with Jan Jelinek to lean on record titles and release notes for clues about the content of his music. As his latest is called Tierbeobachtungen, German for "animal observations," some have been hearing an "animal like" quality in these tracks. And as he's said that he recorded these tracks in various locations while between studios, others are hearing something restless and displaced.

Jan Jelinek ‎– Tierbeobachtungen. Label: ~scape ‎– sc41cd, ~scape ‎– ~scape41cd. Jan Jelinek pushes further into ambient territory with Tierbeobachtungen, a droning fantasia. Instead of using loops of sharp cuts and snippets like his earlier work, Jelinek's loops now linger on, embracing the dub. "A Concert for Television" buzzes ceaselessly, like an electric hive, while "Palmer Aus Lader" sounds like a country drive to a farm of robotic animals. Up to My Same Old Tricks" grinds and hums with a gritty sonic texture, but "Happening Tone" paints a much calmer and gentler soundscape. Curiously, there's not much development.

Cat No: back07 Label: FAITICHE Genre: ELECTRONIC. Strangely enough, Jelinek has dedicated the album to the humble animal kingdom; the snappy title 'Tierbeobachtungen' means 'Animal Observations' and apparently the themes touched on are release and liberation.

Berliner Jan Jelinek is one artist unashamed of revealing his music's source, most obviously on his influential 'Loop Finding Jazz Records' album, where tiny fragments from sixties Blue Note LPs were looped into increasingly complex yet restrained arrangements. A similar approach dictated the glitch techno he produced as Farben, but it's not the dancefloor that currently excites him. 'Tierbeobachtungen', his latest for ~scape, is his follow up on 'Kosmischer Pitch', on which he treated Krautrock in much the same way as LPFJ did jazz.

This album has an average beat per minute of 88 BPM (slowest/fastest tempos: 74/120 BPM). Tracklist Tierbeobachtungen. 1. A Concert For Television.

Jan Jelinek pushes further into ambient territory with _Tierbeobachtungen_, a droning fantasia. "Up to My Same Old Tricks" grinds and hums with a gritty sonic texture, but "Happening Tone" paints a much calmer and gentler soundscape. Curiously, there's not much development in these tracks -- something with which Jelinek has never struggled before -- so I imagine he's simply flexing his creative muscle, rather than repeating previous successes. And, finally, the title track winds things down on layers of structured noise and ringing. Curious.
