Gavin Hellyer Long ago Phew was in a Japanese Punk Group and made her first solo album with members of immortal German band Can. Now, after a fine LP last year, she has put out this amazing record which I believe features only her voice.

For her latest, Voice Hardcore, Phew used no instruments beyond her resilient voice and some electronic effects. Recorded in eight hours over three days in her Tokyo bedroom, it was, Phew said, an attempt to make new reverberations that I have never heard before using only my body. Phew creates droning environments thick with texture and stillness; they can feel ecological, overcast or humid, as if dew is forming on notes. Her hyper-present voice cuts in from any side of a track. Phew’s speak-sing is alternately distorted or pure, spoken or shrieked, guttural or graceful or sometimes both

In stock now for same day shipping. Living legend Phew follows up her brilliant Light Sleep album with another masterwork entitled Voice Hardcore, for New York City based Mesh Key. Phew's career began in the 70s when she fronted Osaka punk group Aunt Sally - who released one album on Vanity Records in 1979. Ryuichi Sakamoto produced Phew's first solo release in 1980, and in 1981 Pass Records issued her debut LP: a classic featuring Holger Czukay and Jaki Liebezeit of Can, with Conny Plank. She's since collaborated with members of DAF, Einsturzende Neubauten, Boredoms and more

To test these things, I needed a private environment. And so Phew found herself working on and recording the whole album in her room with an effector pedal and the same headset mic she uses in her live shows. It was then mixed and mastered by Hiroyuki Nagashima. I thought that I could make an album with only voice after I recorded.
