In 1961 he recorded the album Trouble in Mind, released by Reprise Records Unlike many of his contemporaries, Lipscomb did not record in the early blues era. American Folk Song Traditionalist Sings Trouble in Mind.

Born in 1895, Mance Lipscomb lived most of his life in and around Navasota, Texas. He worked the cotton fields and began playing the guitar at age 14. He almost gave up music for religion, but was cast adrift by local church elders, who accused him of toying with the devil's music. Nevertheless, spirituals would always remain a part of his songbook. Lipscomb cut his teeth on blues greats like Blind Willie Johnson and Blind Lemon Jefferson. Another 50-plus tracks recorded in the summer of '61 provided the selections for this long-lost album, Trouble In Mind. The value of these rather recently minted treasures was not lost on the blues-steeped rockers of the revival.

In 1961 he recorded the album Trouble in Mind, released by Reprise Records Unlike many of his contemporaries, he did not record in the early blues era, but his life is well documented thanks to his autobiography, I Say Me for a Parable: The Oral Autobiography of Mance Lipscomb, Texas Bluesman, narrated to Glen Alyn (published posthumously), and also a short 1971 documentary film by Les Blank, A Well Spent Life. Following his discovery by McCormick and Strachwitz, Lipscomb became an important figure in the American folk music revival of the 1960s. He was a regular performer at folk festivals and folk-blues clubs around the United States, notably the Ash Grove in Los Angeles, California. He died in Navasota in 1976, two years after suffering a stroke.
