The English phrase rule of thumb refers to a principle with broad application that is not intended to be strictly accurate or reliable for every situation. It refers to an easily learned and easily applied procedure or standard, based on practical experience rather than theory. This usage of the phrase can be traced back to the seventeenth century, and has been associated with various trades where quantities were measured by comparison to the width or length of a thumb.

The buzz cut is a classic men’s hairstyle that features short hair all around. Buzz cuts are typically given with electric clippers, and are used to buzz the top of your hair to one length. The buzz cut haircut can also extend to the sides or be combined with a low, mid or high fade. The result is the buzz cut fade, the most popular version of the this very short hairstyle. Ultimately, even with different buzz cut lengths, the key is to just think of really short hair! Perhaps the best part of any buzz haircut, or even brush cut, is the low-maintenance and easy styling

Historically, the width of the thumb, or "thumb's breadth", was used as the equivalent of an inch in the cloth trade; similar expressions existed in Latin and French as well. The thumb has also been used in brewing beer, to gauge the heat of the brewing vat. Ebenezer Cobham Brewer writes that rule of thumb means a "rough measurement".

The buzz cut is a popular classic men’s haircut that requires a short length of hair all over the head. Although buzz cut lengths may vary depending on your personal preference, the cut can work for any type of hair type or face shape. Generally known for its use in the military, the buzz cut is a no frills style that is practical and functional. Nevertheless, for guys who want to save money with a basic but fashionable haircut, the buzz cut hairstyle is the right choice. The cut has a ton of benefits, ranging from keeping your hair off your face to cooling you down faster. Though buzz cut styles work for most face shapes, those with uneven heads or large ears may want to think about opting for a longer style. Very short buzz cuts will bring out any lumps or odd shapes such as scars on the head.
