Although Leroy Smart debuted on disc in the late '60s, 1973's "Mother Liza was the first 45 to actually strike a chord in the sound systems, setting the stage for his breakout hit, "Pride and Ambition," two years later. With that, the floodgates opened, and Smart unleashed a deluge of popular singles, the bulk cut for either Bunny Lee or the Hoo Kim brothers.
Leroy Smart (born 1952, Kingston, Jamaica) is a reggae singer and producer. Smart recorded his first single, "It Pains Me" in 1969. In 1970 he recorded "Ethiopia" for Joe Gibbs, and the first version of one of his most famous songs, "Pride & Ambition", with producer Gussie Clarke. His breakthrough would come in 1973 with "Mother Liza", produced by Jimmy Radway, which topped the local singles chart. He began producing himself in 1977.
While this Leroy Smart album dosn't include his better-known classics like Shame and Pride, Ballistic Affair, I am the Don or others, it does include some scorching songs with the Don's soulful vocals to the fore. This guy is a great singer - and when his volcals are coupled with a memorable melody, such as on Don't Let me Down (not the Beatles song), Rasta Time, Backout Weakheart, Jah is my Future Guide and the song about gambling, then the album is worth your money. Even the less memorable trcks on this album are okay - and all the way Smart's vocals are top notch
In 1977, the Hoo Kim brothers released Leroy Smart's debut album on their Channel One label, and following in the insolent footsteps of myriad Jamaican producers, titled it The Very Best of Leroy Smart. Still the ten-song set bundled up an excellent batch of the singer's recent singles, and when the album was released in Britain by Conflict later that year, it was titled after one of the most popular, "Ballistic Affair
