His Fantasia for Double Orchestra begins, like Wagner’s Das Rheingold, with a low pedal E flat. Adapting minimalist repetition to his own, not un-Wagnerian, grandly discursive ends, he builds three movements of raw, block-like power, yet with seamless continuity and a polished, sometimes luminous surface. The Viola Concerto, a study in textural refinement, is beautifully played by its dedicatee, Walter Trampler, and the London Sinfonietta under Michael Tilson Thomas. Concertante in moto perpetuo is a felicitous toccata for oboe and ensemble.
