Lady In The Dark (Medley). This cast recording is a real gift to Kurt Weill lovers. The narration provides the story of Weill's life and it connects between his most important songs. Jerry Lanning's rendition of September song touches the hart. The whole record is simply a gem.

This collection is devoted to music from shows like The Firebrand of Florence (a 48-performance flop) and Johnny Johnson (68 performances), shows that never had cast albums. Neither did Love Life, another show highlighted here, even though it ran a comparatively long 252 performances, if only because, as annotator Miles Kreuger points out, the year it opened on Broadway there was a strike of the musicians union that prevented anything from being recorded.

Title: Lady in the Dark (1944). Characters from real noirs appear as scenes from various films are intercut. Director: Carl Reiner.

Happy End is a three-act musical comedy by Kurt Weill, Elisabeth Hauptmann, and Bertolt Brecht which first opened in Berlin at the Theater am Schiffbauerdamm on September 2, 1929. It closed after seven performances. In 1977 it premiered on Broadway, where it ran for 75 performances. After the success of Weill and Brecht's previous collaboration, The Threepenny Opera, the duo devised this musical, written by Elisabeth Hauptmann under the pseudonym of Dorothy Lane.

In the 1920's Weill rejected the complexities of art music in the service of radical politics. After 1933, he saw ''that the oppressors were now the oppressed,'' as Mr. Botstein said, and embraced bourgeois culture and liberal democracy. Going on to collaborate with Paul Green and Langston Hughes, he became, politically, a man of the left in the American rather than the European sense, but this change only confirmed his populist musical instincts. The New York Pops, conducted by Skitch Henderson, plays ''Lady in the Dark,'' ''The Saga of Jenny'' and ''Alabama Song,'' with Ute Lemper. March 24. (247-7800). ''Wall to Wall Kurt Weill'' features performances by the New York Chamber Symphony, conducted by John Mauceri; Ensemble Weill, a 23-member troupe from Berlin, in its American debut; Mary Cleere Haran; Rickie Lee Jones; and others.

Kurt Julian Weill (March 2, 1900 – April 3, 1950) was a German composer, active from the 1920s in his native country, and in his later years in the United States. He was a leading composer for the stage who was best known for his fruitful collaborations with Bertolt Brecht. With Brecht, he developed productions such as his best-known work The Threepenny Opera, which included the ballad "Mack the Knife".
