Description

Social Distortion - Alone And Forsaken - Old School Video - A Tribute To One Of The Best Punk Rock Bands Ever! From The Album Hard Times And Nursery Rhymes!

In August 2005, sources reported that Social Distortion was going to begin work on a seventh studio album to be released in 2006. However, frontman Mike Ness told Crush Music Magazine that a new Social Distortion album would "probably" not come out in 2006 or anytime soon. He explained, "I feel like we've got a great start on a new album, we'd like to do a new album soon but I doubt it will be that soon A September 2010 issue of Rolling Stone magazine claimed the album would be released on November 23, 2010.

Work on the album began in 2006 and it was originally forecast for a 2007 release, but was pushed back several times while the band continued touring and writing new material. After four years of writing, Social Distortion recorded the album from February to July 2010 at Ocean Studios in Burbank, California. Drummer Atom Willard left the group during the recording sessions in favor of his other band, Angels & Airwaves. He was temporarily replaced by Scott Reeder before David Hidalgo, Jr. joined as the band's new permanent drummer.

Social Distortion may just have been missing from our lives for the past seven years, but Hard Times and Nursery Rhymes conveys that there is no need to shake off the dust. As sharp as they have been for decades, Social Distortion has returned with a cohesive and distinctive record that is only slightly hindered by the occasional clichéd lyric. For a band that has been to hell and back, Social Distortion unloads their storied inspiration and emotion into Hard Times and Nursery Rhymes, and sounds damn good at it in the process

Social Distortion cut their first album in 1983, and well over 25 years later, they have a trademark style, if there's any such thing, a rough-hewn hybrid of punk rock guitar attack and rootsy melodies influenced by classic blues, country, and rockabilly. By now, Mike Ness and his bandmates could probably crank this stuff out in their sleep if they wanted, but 2011's Hard Times and Nursery Rhymes is clearly the work of a band that still gives a damn about their rock & roll, no matter how familiar the surroundings. Iconic So-Cal rockers Social Distortion are currently facing that conundrum with the release of Hard Times and Nursery Rhymes, their first album in six years.

His name is Mike Ness, his band Social Distortion and on their sixth record Hard Times & Nursery Rhymes, Mike shows us again, why he is a great songwriter and story teller. Mike Ness has taken over a void left when Joe Strummer passed away. He’s songs show a wealth of life experience of man who plays country influenced punk rock with that raspy, whiskey tarnished voice. Never a man to stick with conventions, the album opens with an instrumental track Road Warriors. The track sets up the rest of the album which displays that trademark Social Distortion sound. The wait has definitely worthwhile for Social D fans. The album is a solid and grows with repeated listens. Touring for Soundwave in their first trip to Australia in February, it would be a crime to not see this punk legend take to the stage.

The guitars are pure Social Distortion as they buckle behind with a crunchy distortion that floats somewhere between punk and country music. Can’t Take It With You adds a backing choir who evoke gospel motifs. The characters in these songs are, as one title implies, Diamond In the Rough. Mike Ness is Social Distortion. Guitarist Jonny Wickersham returns on guitar and the rhythm section of bassist Brent Harding and session drummer Josh Freese keeps things tight and focused, but this is the Mike Ness show. It’s primarily his songs and it’s his vocals that identify these tunes. His snarl grants great empathy to the Wickersham co-write Far Side of Nowhere, a driving sorrow to the cover of Hank Williams’ Alone and Forsaken and a defiant pride to Still Alive.
