Smokin' at the Half Note is an album by Wes Montgomery and the Wynton Kelly Trio that was released in 1965. It was recorded live in June 1965 at the Half Note Club in New York City and September 22, 1965 at Van Gelder Studios in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey. The album combines guitarist Montgomery with the Miles Davis rhythm section from 1959–1963 of Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers, and Jimmy Cobb. The album's versions of "Unit 7" and "Four on Six" have helped to establish these songs as jazz standards.

Smokin' At The Half Note. That issue aside, this Japanese pressing of Smokin’ at The Half Note is an album of first-rate jazz music that sounds phenomenal; thanks to the exceptional remastering by USM Japan. One person found this helpful.
Montgomery is technically dazzling, making the difficult technique of soloing in octaves his trademark. Yet he seldom plays a solo that doesn't swing like mad. Check out "Unit 7": the first half packs enough melodic ideas to fuel an album or two, before Montgomery takes the energy higher with thrashing chords. Pianist Wynton Kelly turns in a lovely, understated take on the standard "What's Ne. Smokin' at the Half Note Wes Montgomery.

Until now, Full House (Riverside, 1962) was the only other recording that Montgomery made with the Wynton Kelly Trio, and served as a prelude to what was to come with the Half Note recording, which took place at the New York City club in late June, 1965. Between that time and the dates of the present collection-April 14 and 21, 1966-Chambers had departed the band, recording Sonny Criss' This is Criss (Prestige, 1966), Teddy Edwards' Nothin' But the Truth (Prestige, 1966) and Lee Morgan's The Rajah (Blue Note, 1966). Fast forward eight months or so and the Wynton Kelly Trio, with McClure now in tow, performed with Montgomery at Seattle's Penthouse, recorded for a weekly 30-minute jazz radio program on KING-FM put on by local radio personality, Jim Wilke.
