Orlando Paladino, one of his few comic vocal works, would seem to avoid this difficulty, but it has frustrated audiences with its bizarre plot, a mixture of comic and serious elements in which passion suddenly devolves into broad farce. The opera even bears the subtitle of "dramma eroicomico," or heroic-comic drama. This recording by the veteran t conductor Nikolaus Harnoncourt and his Concentus Musicus Wien sorts things out on several levels

Nikolaus Harnoncourt describes Haydn's Orlando Paladino, first performed in 1782, as "one of the best works in 18th-century music theatre". But many might disagree. Based on Ariosto, the opera furiously satirises both military posturing and sexual stereotyping, as well as asserting the moral supremacy of relationships based on genuine erotic fulfilment, all of which marks it out as being ahead of its time.
Orlando Paladino", written in 1782, was Haydn's most famous opera during his lifetime, with thirty performances in Esterháza in the first two years after its composition. The libretto a 'drama eroicomico' gives scope to Haydn's frequently puckish sense of humor, as well as for his inventive melodic expression. Most semi-serious operas of the period typically inserted comic characters into an essentially serious story, but Haydn expanded the comedy even into the more serious scenes.
Haydn: Orlando Paladino (1782). A rare opera by Haydn, 'Orlando Paladino' predates Mozart's Don Giovanni by five years and is a similar mix of the comic and the dramatic - it's even known as a 'dramma eroicomico'. In 2009, the Berlin Staatsoper gave the opera a storybook staging. See the full gallery: Orlando Furioso: music inspired by the epic poem.
