Enemy of the Sun is the fourth studio album by Californian avant-garde metal band Neurosis. It was originally released on Alternative Tentacles in 1993 and later reissued on Neurot Recordings in 1999. The album was reissued with new cover artwork on April 20, 2010. On February 14, 2012, a fully remastered version was released on vinyl via Relapse Records.
Neurosis's choice of sample was prescient. Enemy Of The Sun stands at the beginning of one of the most fertile creative periods in metal history. It and its successors spawned an entire subgenre; it's so ingrained in the current metal scene that it's easy to take for granted. Still, 19 years after its release, Enemy Of The Sun remains a shocking listen. All of its disparate elements - mucky riffs, bad-trip electronics, violins and horns, Roeder's inexorable tom pounding - coalesce into a unified whole, held taut by the last of Neurosis's punk sinews. That self-immolating intensity rages through this album, peaking as the whole band attacks Roeder's kit on closer 'Cleanse. released September 17, 1994.
Enemy of the Sun’ begins in this fashion with a weird echo vocal effect that leads into one of their traditional monolithic, bouncy riffs, but is followed up by a noteworthy tom-tom swirling, bass ridden bridge that climaxes with a bang. All in all, the majority of this disc will certainly hold your attention if you’re a fan of strange post metal experimentation, especially the final song clocking in at nearly sixteen minutes consisting of a drum-line like tom-tom jam session. Despite the songs length and tendencies to be a-bit-too-much, it stands as one of the better closures to any Neurosis album. Main vocalists and songwriters Steve Von Till and Scott Kelly are a bizarre pairing so to speak. As creatively perplexing as their music already is, the duo writes in an almost spiritual kind of way while matching their vocals to his notes in a very fitting manner.

But in 1993, Neurosis, and in a different but related way Swans, were practically on their own, and on Enemy of the Sun Neurosis built upon the reach and power of Souls at Zero to create another masterpiece of on-the-edge, high-volume rampage that resists easy genre classification.

Neurosis, and Enemy of the Sun in particular, triumphs in this regard because it sounds so real. Enemy Of The Sun" is probably the first album that showed to the world Neurosis' undeniable genius. It's also the precursor of what they went on to summon on the infamous "Through Silver In Blood".
