Top of the Pops 2 (also known as TOTP2) is a British television music show broadcast on BBC Two, showing archive footage from the long-running Top of the Pops show, some dating back to the 1960s when the programme first aired on British television, as well as other surviving BBC programmes. From its debut in 1994, the show was narrated by BBC Radio 2 DJ Johnnie Walker. Steve Wright took over in 1997 and hosted the show until being replaced by Mark Radcliffe in December 2009.
In both cases, the album covers were adorned with female models, in a manner that would now be regarded as exploitative and politically incorrect. We reproduce some of them here and hope that readers will see them as representative of a rather different time in British society. Thus, early in August 1971, ‘Hot Hits 6’ reached No. 1 and then, two weeks later, ‘Top Of The Pops 18’ did the same, incongruously stealing the top spot from the Moody Blues’ ‘Every Good Boy Deserves Favour. The album contained versions, of varying degrees of accuracy, of such recent favourites from the hit parade as Middle Of The Road’s ‘Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep,’ Hurricane Smith’s ‘Don’t Let It Die,’ T. Rex’s ‘Get It On’ and the Rolling Stones’ ‘Street Fighting Man’ - all gamely performed, if unlikely to convince diehard fans. Listen to ‘Top Of The Pops Volume 18’ on this site.
A sharp summation of the state of the . chart in June 1969, Top of the Pops, Vol. 6 also marked the first anniversary of the redoubtable series' launch with one of the strongest lineups yet, as the anonymous session men hired by producer Alan Crawford got their teeth into such meaty treats as the Rolling Stones' "Honky Tonk Women" and Thunderclap
