Limousin is a former administrative region of France. On 1 January 2016, it became part of the new region of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. It comprised three departments: Corrèze, Creuse, and Haute-Vienne. Situated mostly in the south central French Massif Central, Limousin had (in 2010) 742,770 inhabitants spread out on nearly 17,000 km², making it the least populated region of metropolitan France.

Along with him and other pipers, the region is known for Corrèze's distinct violin tradition as well as the hurdy-gurdy.
Lo Jai was formed in Lyon, France in 1980, when three members of the traditionalist band, Le Grand Rouge, joined a fellow-musician to explore regional Limousin music.
