For the Good Times" is a song written by Kris Kristofferson, first recorded by singer Bill Nash in 1968 before appearing on Kristofferson's own debut album in April 1970. After a recording by Ray Price became a number-one hit single in June of that year, the song established Kristofferson as one of country and popular music's top songwriters while giving Price his first chart-topping country and western song in 11 years.

Noble Ray Price (January 12, 1926 – December 16, 2013) was an American country music singer, songwriter and guitarist. His wide-ranging baritone has often been praised as among the best male voices of country music. Some of his well-known recordings include "Release Me", "Crazy Arms", "Heartaches by the Number", "For the Good Times", "Night Life", and "You're the Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me". He was elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1996 and-even into his late 80s-continued to record and tour.

Through the combined talents of Kris Kristofferson and Ray Price, "For the Good Times" quickly became one of country music's most impactful additions to popular culture," Kristofferson wrote one of the most heartbreaking songs from a genre that, fair or not, is widely associated with heartbreak. Its seminal recording remains a 1970 hit by Price. The voice of the Nashville sound wrung every drop of pain from its lyrics for his fifth number one country single. His recording won the Academy of Country Music (ACM) Song of the Year award, with the album named for the song lauded as the ACM Album of the Year. The song also netted a Grammy.
One month before Ray Price passed away in December 2013, the country legend put the finishing touches on one last album, wrapping up the recording sessions for Beauty I. ith help from producer Fred Foster and string conductor Bergen White. Nearly three years later, Wille Nelson has reassembled the same team for For the Good Times: A Tribute to Ray Price, a moving record that finds Nelson - a short-lived member of Price’s touring band, the Cherokee Cowboys, in 1961, as well as a longtime friend during the half-century that followed - saluting one of his mentors . Ray Price, an old-time country singer who had his hey-day in the 1940s and '50s, sang an unforgettable version of the sad country ballad. By the '60s, Price had become a gospel singer, but his rendition of Kristofferson's song made him a stalwart of classic country music.
