Guppy is the debut album of Brooklyn power pop group Charly Bliss, consisting of Eva Hendricks (vocals, guitar), Spencer Fox (vocals, guitar), Sam Hendricks (drums), and Dan Shure (vocals, bass). The group wrote it over the course of four years and recorded two versions of it: one tracked in 2015, which they rejected because it wasn't "fun," and a more pop-infused version recorded in early 2016 that was released by Barsuk Records in April 2017.

This album was a joy to make. We worked harder and were more focused than ever before, and our confidence and trust in one another and ourselves grew with every song we wrote. Last month, New York quartet Charly Bliss unveiled their sophomore record, Young Enough. Unapologetically pop, the record bursts with sparkling effervescence while the lyrics tackle some incredibly deep and dark subject matters, including frontwoman Eva Hendricks experience with sexual assault.

Charly Bliss took three years from 2014’s EP Soft Serve to full-length debut Guppy, largely due to grappling with this context. The original incarnation of Guppy was a garage-rock set produced by Justin Pizzoferrato (Parquet Courts, Speedy Ortiz), but the whole thing got scrapped on grounds of grunge. Charly Bliss gets this; there’s a bluntness to Hendricks’ lyrics reminiscent of The Pink Album-era Tuscadero or, at their bitterest, the quick-cut unease of early Throwing Muses. It’d be easy for a track called DQ to stop at its titular reference-it’s ice cream! So kitschy!
