Slightly odd,avantgarde, but with a warm glow. Theres many fusions of styles on this album and it's one of those great CD's where everytrack is actually different and each track has some kind of suprise, or variation. Certainly it's roots are black metal. We have hyper blast drumming, double bass drumming,shreiking Cradle-esque vocals, icey cold guitaring.

The Linear Scaffold was Solefald's debut album, and it showed right off the bat that they were a band with their own sound and vision. They get lumped into the black metal genre, and they do have certain sonic elements in common with the more symphonic black metal bands such as early Cradle of Filth or Dimmu Borgir; for instance, the big pipe organ keyboards and the painfully shrieking vocals that appear on much of this album

The Linear Scaffold, as an album, is anything but linear. We are taken through so many different moods throughout this album it is hard to keep track. From black metal blast beats to beautiful piano motifs, from screeching vocals to spoken word poetry, from folk to classical, all within these 40 minutes. Noise ? Not at all. In fact, the songs in themselves are coherent, and, strangely enough, so is the album. The production is average, but works well enough for the type(s) of music. I must partially agree as I also think this is a good album and that there probably wasnīt many like it back in 1997. There are a few things that keeps this from being an excellent album though and for me itīs especially the vocals.

In 1997 The Linear Scaffold was released from rather humble beginnings but today it is held in high esteem by many because it was the product of two creatively insane minds. The sheer plethora of musical ideas alone is testament to this. nothing was sacred to Cornelius Jakhelln and Lazare Nedland.
