Works Volume 2 is the sixth studio album by Emerson, Lake & Palmer, released in 1977. Unlike Works Volume 1 (which consisted of three solo sides and one ensemble side), Works Volume 2 was a single album and it was seemingly a compilation of leftover tracks from other album sessions. While many derided the album for its apparent lack of focus, others felt that it showed a different side of the band, with blues, bluegrass and jazz being very prominent as musical genres in this recording.

Having Brooks Smith as accompanist, Rabin feels more at ease at quiet moments and more focused at furious ones. The sound quality is very good, the record is flat and quiet.

Rabin was widely regarded as the finest virtuoso violinist of his generation and despite dying at the young age of 36 after suffering with a neurological illness his fame continues long after his death. He was critically acclaimed for his performances and recordings of Paganini and included in the set are Rabin's two recorded versions of the Paganini Violin Concerto N. in D Major Op. 6 from 1956 and 1960. Brooks Smith, a pianist and teacher who for many years toured and made recordings with the violinist Jascha Heifetz, died on Oct. 31 in Covina, Calif. He was 88 and lived in Hacienda Heights, Calif. Mr. Smith was born in McAllen, Te. in 1912 and began his piano studies when he was 4. In the early 1930's he won a full scholarship to the Juilliard School, where he studied with Josef and Rosina Lhevinne. During his student years, he became interested in the art song repertory and began working as an accompanist for singers. In 1966 Mr. Smith joined the faculty of the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, where he taught piano accompaniment and chamber music until 1972. From 1972 until his retirement, in 1988, he was on the faculty of the University of Southern California. He is survived by his sister, Margaret Proctor of Pharr, Tex.
