It was written by Jerry Leiber and Phil Spector, and produced by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. In 1971, Aretha Franklin released a cover version of the song that outperformed the original on the charts, in which Franklin changed the lyrics slightly: from "A red rose up in Spanish Harlem" to "There's a rose in Black 'n Spanish Harlem. A rose in Black 'n Spanish Harlem. Her version went to on the US soul charts for three weeks and Pop for two weeks. Spanish Harlem" was kept from the spot by Go Away Little Girl by Donny Osmond. Aretha Franklin (March 25, 1942 - August 16, 2018) was a Memphis, Tennessee born and Detroit, Michigan reared American iconic gospel, soul, and R&B singer, songwriter and pianist. Many have called her "The Queen Of Soul" and "Lady Soul". She is renowned for her soul and R&B recordings (on many, of which, she accompanied herself on keyboards and piano, a skill she learned at an early age, learning to play by ear, according to lifetime friend Smokey Robinson) but was also adept at jazz, rock, blues, pop, and gospel.

On Franklin’s 41st and final album, Aretha Franklin Sings the Great Diva Classics, the legend returned for one last lesson to the current generation of vocal powerhouses. Franklin covered everyone from the Supremes to Alicia Keys on her 2014 LP, but it was her take on Adele’s star-making hit Rolling in the Deep that captured everyone’s attention, turning into a Number One Dance hit and letting the world know that her reign wasn’t over. Aretha Franklin demonstrated her remarkable mutability on this Lauryn Hill-penned track.
