In 1967, Gott performed at Midem, the music industry trade fair in Cannes, France, where the applause was measured during every concert. Karel Gott recorded a cover version of the song All by Myself called Kam tenkrát šel můj bratr Jan (Where Did My Brother Jan Go This Time), dedicated to Jan Palach, the student activist who killed himself by self-immolation as a protest against the Soviet occupation of Czechoslovakia in January 1969.

It is Karel Gott's 80th birthday today! Here is one of his greatest. hits, the song Trezor, with an accompanying music video made in 1965. The Czech Sinatra is still an active performer. In 1963, Gott won the Golden Nightingale (Zlatý slavík) award for best male signer, the first of who has 41 that he currently holds. It was also during this decade that he started being popular in Germany, signing a contract with Polydor/Deutsche Grammophon Gesellschaft in 1967. His is the voice on many legendary Czech songs (or at least their Czech and often German versions) such as Carnival (Lady Karneval), Forever Young (Být stále mlád). The main tracks to popular films such as the fairytale Three Wishes for Cinderella (Tři oříšky pro Popelku), or TV series such as Maya the Honey Bee (Včelka Mája) are also sung by him.
