When we speak by phone while she is at home in Nashville, Elson cannot contain her well-deserved excitement at the positive feedback. For Elson, it’s particularly rewarding, because she wasn’t sure Doubles Roses would ever make it to fans.

With Double Roses, Karen Elson proves that the seven-year wait between this album and The Ghost Who Walks was worth it. As she expands on the gift for setting a mood she displayed on her debut, she also takes her music in a more personal direction, trading theatrical murder ballads for portraits of sorrow and strength that evoke British psych-folk and Laurel Canyon singer/songwriters - as well as hints of Dolly Parton, Stevie Nicks, and Mazzy Star.

I expected "Double Roses" to be a bit more of a g singer-songwriter effort, but found a surprisingly lush, meticulously crafted album full of sprawling, adventurous arrangements. Karen Elson's vocals seem to have improved since her 2010 effort, and she's a capable conductor of all this action. Sometimes the arrangements are a bit too indulgent, with harp or flute solos masking some occasionally trite songwriting, but for the most part, "Double Roses".
