The Moonlight Sonata was composed in the summer of 1801 in Hungary, on an estate belonging to the Brunswick family. The composition was published in 1802 and was dedicated to Beethoven’s pupil and passion, 17 years old Countess Giulietta Gucciardi. The Sonata is one of the most popular piano sonatas from Beethoven’s creation. It is also named The Moonlight Sonata by poet Ludwig Rellstab who, in 1832, had this inspiration on a moon lit night on the banks of the Lucerna River.

Here he performs the unforgettable "Moonlight" sonata, whose Adagio sostenuto movement is one of the most beloved works of Western classical music. I'm listening to the "Moonlight" sonata now, which is the next sonata on the CD. It's also technically very good, and the second movement is performed with more expressiveness than the second movement of Pathetique, I think. But, even in this piece, I have the sense that Mr. O'Conor is sometimes more focused on his performance of the music than he is on the music itself. Of course, these are just my personal observations.
