Original Benny Goodman Trio and Quartet Sessions, Vol. 1: After You've Gone is a jazz compilation album by Benny Goodman. Released in 1987, it consists of selections recorded and originally released by Victor during 1935 and 1936. The personnel included Goodman on clarinet, Teddy Wilson on piano, and Gene Krupa on drums. When the trio became a quartet in August 1936, the fourth member was Lionel Hampton on vibraphone
Benny Goodman, born Benjamin David Goodman, (May 30, 1909 – June 13, 1986) was an American jazz musician, known as King of Swing, Patriarch of the Clarinet, The Professor, and Swing's Senior Statesman. Goodman was regarded by some as a demanding taskmaster, by others an arrogant and eccentric martinet. Many musicians spoke of The Ray, Goodman's trademark glare that he bestowed on a musician who failed to perform to his demanding standards. Anita O'Day and Helen Forrest spoke bitterly of their experiences singing with Goodman. Benny Goodman and His Orchestra. View all similar artists.
The Famous 1938 Carnegie Hall Jazz Concert by Benny Goodman, Columbia Records catalogue item SL-160, is a two-disc LP of swing and jazz music recorded at Carnegie Hall in New York City on January 16, 1938. First issued in 1950, the landmark recording captured the premiere performance given by a big band in the famed concert venue. The event has been described as "the single most important jazz or popular music concert in history: jazz's 'coming out' party to the world of 'respectable' music.
Labeled No. 2, these excellent aircheck performances have no relation to the Carnegie Hall concert except for the time period. The Benny Goodman Orchestra and small groups often sounded much more exciting live in concert than on their studio recordings and one can really tell from these performances why drummer Gene Krupa was so popular, and a thorn in BG's side. With Harry James, Ziggy Elman, and Chris Griffin forming a classic trumpet section, the Benny Goodman Orchestra (with its clean ensembles and hard-swinging sound) had its own distinctive and well-loved style.
