Outspoken’s A Light in the Dark album hit stores in 1992. Take me into your mindset during the recording sessions. After Outspoken split up, you and Dennis Remsing formed a new band, Kill the Messenger. The group released three EPs in the late ‘90s, early ‘00s. For that stuff, the material leaned in a more raw punk direction. I had gotten my family and career on track and missed playing music. Dennis had moved to San Francisco, so we started talking about playing music again.

Outspoken is the second studio album from Minnesota-based band For All Those Sleeping, released through Fearless Records on June 19, 2012, nearly two years after their debut album Cross Your Fingers. The album showcases a much heavier metalcore sound with more prominent usage of unclean vocals and limited use of pop punk style choruses which were featured regularly on the aforementioned debut. Similarly to the first album, this album was also produced by Cameron Mizell.

A few songs, most notably the plodding "A Light in the Dark" and the ten-plus-minute "Prisoner," bring on a stoner metal vibe akin to late-era Black Flag or the more mainstream moments of the Butthole Surfers, but it's not a style that fits either the songs or the band particularly well. It's on the short sharp shocks of the old-school hardcore tunes that John Coyle's snarling vocals and Mike Hartsfield's riff-heavy guitars are in their proper element, and these songs are as good as anything the band has done

I had the album back in the day, not sure how I got it, but I liked it. ERIC F - 8 months ago. This is definitely an improvement! I liked the songs but the original mix sounded rushed like a demo.

Outspoken have never quite been able to stay with a stable lineup or on a single record label for very long, which makes the epic, double-album-length Spotlight sound either like a statement of defiance or a valiant last gasp, depending. That's depending on which of these 28 tracks is playing, actually: this is a terribly uneven, though quite often impressive, album.
