Mat Zo is a legend in the making and his album, Damage Control, reminds me a bit of Daft Punk

Mat Zo – Damage Control.

Damage Control is the debut studio album by British electronic music producer Mat Zo. It peaked at number 1 on the US Billboard Top Heatseekers chart, and number 7 on the US Billboard Dance/Electronic Albums chart. The album was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Dance/Electronic Album in 2013. All tracks written by Matan Zohar. Easy" and "EZ" contain samples of "Nothing Better" performed by Colourblind.

Mat Zo - Damage Control (album sampler) 9:55. Rachel Collier - Only For You (Original Mix) 5:15. Mat Zo - Caller ID 4:03. Mat Zo - Damage Control (Official Promo Video) 1:34.

After hitting on the Beatport charts for Easy and dealing with a stolen record fiasco, Mat Zo’s debut artist album, Damage Control, has finally been released on Above & Beyond’s Anjunabeats. With 15 songs, the album takes listeners on a melodic journey through house, trance, funk, and everything in-between. The first track of the album, Superman Lost, begins with a foggy, haunting introduction, which fades into a resonant, enchanting melody. Seductive, Eastern-style vocals tumble into relaxed electronic sounds that gain intensity, drawing the listener into the album

And after years of work he has finally come out with his first official full album Damage Control (2013) and again he has created something that only we can hear from this unique and truly talented artist that branches away from the traditional EDM sound that we have been hearing lately  . Great album full of Mat Zo's unique style. I enjoy all but one track (lucid dreams), otherwise a cutting edge and we'll crafted album.

This has been repressed. Don't pay these crazy high prices.

This album sums up everything what is wrong in current electronic music scene. Most of the tracks have some nice ideas but that's all. Like so many other producers, Mat Zo now refuses to produce tracks "for the floor", that means tracks with a DJ-friendly intro and or outro, tracks that are longer than 4 minutes or faster than 118bpm. It feels like he refuses to make House or at least something you can work with on a floor. As user sayeh wrote, "EZ" and "Hurricane" are interesting tracks here, but why the hell are they so short? "Only For You" is good too, but way too slow, the tempo doesn't fit the style here. "Easy" has the right tempo and is not too short, but unfortunately it is annoying as the SHM stuff. "The Sky" is my personal favourite, it's the only track I can imagine to integrate into a set.I don't care about the other, mostly downtempo, pseudo-Soul/Disco or Dubstep tracks, it is like Mat Zo wants to tell us, "hey, I can write true songs, too!", but unfortunately they are nothing really new or original and were better written in the 70s or at least by Daft Punk, or some Dubstep producers. In other words: If I want to listen to Dubstep, I buy a Dubstep album, same for Disco, Soul etc. If I want to listen to Mat Zo, I want something for the floor, some housy and some trancy melodies. Of course, there is nothing wrong with slower tracks. But hey, there used to be a whole chill/ambient subgenre in the Trance/Progressive scene, so why not put something like this on the album ("Superman Lost" is the sole exception here.)

I've read one of his interviews regarding this album. Of course he says something like "experimenting", "influence" and "concept", this is advertising language. But I think that's only half the story, cause this album sounds so similar to many hyped and successful stuff out there, that I think the retro and dubstep tracks here also have commercial reasons (other example would be the new Daft Punk album). I don't say that this album is totally bad (in fact some of the tracks are really nice), but I regret that he doesn't have the guts to do something more progressive / underground. On the other hand, almost every former Progressive House /Trance producer has stopped to produce this kind of sound in the past few years, so this is - unfortunately - no exception. Funny thing is that only the style tags have survived.

If you've read or listened to a few of Mat's interviews regarding the album, you would've known that this "Damage Control" was never intended to be a DJ-friendly album. This was to be him experimenting with his influences over the years and to make something that's definitely not "for the floor." It's a concept album if you wish.
