It's always regrettable when a talented jazz improviser puts jazz on the back burner, and that's exactly what Roy Ayers did when he made soul and funk his primary emphasis in the late '70s. As a jazz vibist, Ayers showed great potential in the '60s and early '70s, so it's understandable that jazz lovers were sorry to see him give up instrumental jazz. But when jazz purists claimed that Ayers' soul/funk output was worthless, they were dead wrong.

Representative from Montana, see Roy E. Ayers. In 1981, Ayers produced an album with the singer Sylvia Striplin, Give Me Your Love (Uno Melodic Records, 1981). In the same year, 1981, he also produced a second album called Africa, Center of the World on Polydor records along with James Bedford and Ayers's bass player William Henry Allen. Allen can be heard talking to his daughter on the track "Intro/The River Niger". The album was recorded at the Sigma Sound Studios, New York . Step into Our Life (1978) (w/ Wayne Henderson).
To call Roy Ayers a crossover artist is technically accurate, but at some point it’s worth asking where he wound up crossing to, and where the line he crossed even stood in the first place. A prodigious jazz talent raised in a musical Los Angeles household, he was literally handed a set of vibraphone mallets by great master of the instrument Lionel Hampton at age five. By his early twenties Ayers went from his recorded debut as a sideman to the headliner of his own album within a year
