Automatic for the People is the eighth studio album by American alternative rock band . released on October 5, 1992 by Warner Bros. Upon release, it reached number two on the US albums chart and yielded six singles. The album has sold 18 million copies worldwide, and has received widespread acclaim by critics. began production on the album while their previous album, Out of Time (1991), was still ascending top albums charts and achieving global success.
Automatic for the People captures the group at a crossroads, as they moved from cult heroes to elder statesmen, and the album is a graceful transition into their new status. It is a reflective album, with frank discussions on mortality, but it is not a despairing record - "Nightswimming," "Everybody Hurts," and "Sweetness Follows" have a comforting melancholy, while "Find the River" provides a positive sense of closure.
This might seem strange given that the band had been on a steep downward slope for the best part of 20 years, but the utter brilliance of their earlier work - as well as the odd latter day highlight - meant that it was still felt great to have them among us. If measured by overall influence, it's probably their eighties albums while on . which stand the tallest, but in terms of sheer scale, magnificence and ambition, no other album in their 31-year career can touch their 1992 masterpiece Automatic For The People
