All four movements are driven by extensively repeated rhythmic figures, reminiscent of the musical style of Schubert’s great idol, Beethoven. Full of Schubertian ambivalence, the String Quartet in A minor is a deeply intimate work.

Lucie vellere: string quartet no. sarah aderholdt: string quartet. Ruth schonthal: string quartet. Amy beach: string quartet, opus 79. Crescent Quartet. Leonarda LPI 111. This is a self-consciously "liberated" disc, with an ensemble of women giving exemplary performances of four short quartets composed by women composers between 1929 and 1978. Most interesting are the classically oriented work by Vellere, the imaginative piece by Aderholdt, with its minimalist, mystical overtones, and the post-Romantic quartet by Beach, based on Eskimo themes.

The string quartets and piano quintet are also great works but can be saved for later. This is music you will play many times. If you fall in love with this music also listen to the sonatas for violin, cello, and clarinet as well as the piano trios and quartets.
