Side 'A' opens with "Eurean", a moody bass mass fading into view, developing through a series of changes into a much more varied soundscape, always favouring grey amorphous images. As with "Catalogue Of Abuse", the sounds seem to be deliberately distorted, but not in a harsh way. "Ewst 3" fades in on similar murky clouds, suggesting sounds, lights & shapes hidden within it's strange body. Snatches of human voice are heard, suggestions of life caught within the cyclic (cyclonic?) slow shifter. "Merdian" uses ambient city sounds - bird song, police sirens, traffic & crowds, suggestions of threat over which loops both mechanical & human build up in odd hybrids. "Merdiest" rises up on a loop of running water, while what sounds like muffled electronics rise in disquieting sustains. "Tinks" again uses edgeless grey chunks of booming sound, but this time suggesting some form of rhythm (biological, like heartbeat, or mechanical, like some ponderous generator). "Newnds" slides out of the speakers like distant thunder, it's breathtaking majesty held in a few milliseconds sustain while the merest hint of voice lies beneath. "Techback" returns to the ambience of the crowd with voices (recorded in a café or canteen) echoing across a dark drift of greyness. The 'B' side opens with "Recant", an outwardly simple, but inwardly complex massing of grey noise which fades to allow others like it to swell & grow, the distant sound of land masses forced by nature into some mockery of mating. It mellows out, becoming tamed into light greys for "Medict/Loff", the final whispy suggestions of a passing storm, before rising once more like some horror film monster reanimating predictably to take more lives as "Recant 2". "Gigist 7" is another journey through grey shapeless landscapes, where machines hewn from granite perform their multifarious tasks. "Gigist 8" follows similar lines, a swirling vortex of mists through which stick-like percussion can be discerned cycling along to a non-linear rhythm. "Gigist 9" is similar to the previous track, reminding me a little of something by LULL. "Stoice", the final track, is more structured with fast jungle drums muffled into the background greyness, voices & deep booms making this a dance track for the calcified generation. From here it moves further into the area of grey noise, becoming a mass of concrete-textured noise.A lot more easy on the ears than the previous album - indeed almost relaxing, in a cold, inhuman way. Whether the greyness was deliberate or accident is irrelevant - it works. Akin to Pure Noise, but much more passive - those who like the more ambient stuff by DOME, or early PESSARY should enjoy it.Originally reviewed for Soft Watch.
