Complete your Antonin Artaud collection. Antonin can be heard screaming in the background, in a stairwell. The booklet is ok but could have a little more information, considering how many books, essays there are on the subject. Luckily it was recorded in a studio, not a performance. Why aren't more poets, writers recorded like this? An interesting historical document! Not sure why Van Gogh - suicided by society has never been released.

Antonin Artaud had his first mental breakdown at the age of 16 and, from there on out, spent much of his life in and out of asylums. Diagnosed with incurable paranoid delirium, Artaud suffered from hallucinations, glossolalia, and bouts of violent rage. And his treatment probably did about as much harm as it did good. The play was a flop when it debuted, running for a mere 17 performances. Even Sontag conceded that Les Cenci was not a very good play. Artaud’s last work was an audio piece called To Have Done With The Judgment Of God (Pour en Finir avec le Jugement de dieu), and it proved to be equally unpopular, at least with some very important people. Commissioned by Ferdinand Pouey, head of the dramatic and literary broadcasts for French Radio in 1947, the work was written by Artaud after he spent the better part of WWII interned in an asylum where he endured the worst of his treatment.

Pescado Rabioso recorded an album titled Artaud. Their leader Luis Alberto Spinetta wrote the lyrics partly basing them on Artaud's writings. Composer John Zorn has written many works inspired by and dedicated to Artaud, including seven CDs: "Astronome", "Moonchild: Songs Without Words", "Six Litanies for Heliogabalus", "The Crucible", "Ipsissimus", "Templars: In Sacred Blood" and "The Last Judgment", a monodrama for voice and orchestra inspired by Artaud's late  . In case Antonin Artaud still needs to be introduced - he's the man who is behind the 'theatre de cruauté' or 'theatre of cruelty', one of the most enigmatic figures of the early avant-garde movement and without doubt a masterful writer. Pour en finir avec le jugement de dieu' was originally c 'Là où ça sent la merde, ça sent l'être. L'homme aurait très bien pu ne pas chier, ne pas ouvrir la poche anale, mais il a choisi de chier comme il aurait choisi de vivre au lieu de consentir à vivre mort. Artaud doesn't really manage to convince me of the virtues of primal instinct; mainly because his writing is so very incoherent and rambling. As a poetry collection, however, 'Pour en finir avec le jugement de dieu' is quite exquisite, both in rhythm as in ideas. There's a ton of great lines, which makes this book a fast and amusing read, but not one which should be taken all too seriously in its own right.

Antonin Artaud was a French poet, dramatist, and director and one of the most important figures in 20th century European theater, and especially the avant-garde. His piece 'Pour En Finir Avec Le Jugement De Dieu' was recorded in 1947 to be aired on French radio. But the project was shelved not only for its scatological, anti-American, anti-religious content, but also for its avant-garde sound, with screams, cries, grunts, glossolalia, and general cacophony, all of which the radio thought would be too shocking for the listeners of post-WWII France.
