Depending on whether you have the vinyl or the compact dic, this release can come off conceptually different, due to the fact that with the vinyl there are four places to begin the spin. I’m lucky enough to own both and find myself always drawn to the vinyl, not just because I have more control, but rather, it just feels more intimate and more immediate than the CDs.Compilations certainly have there place, and while this one doesn’t offer up any previously unknown gems, it is a straightforward collection of the best of the best for The Doors, pretty much the songs anyone in their right mind would choose. That being said, I can think of a couple numbers I’d have included that would have made for a more inclusive window on The Doors, songs that might have been a bit more exciting, rather than taking up a huge chunk of one side with the staggering opus “The End,” a song most people listen to once or in sections, especially in the company of others.By 1985, there was no stopping the onslaught of digital recordings in America, so it’s with great pleasure that I say that while these tracks were not seriously remastered, they were pressed rather well, making for a great sonic emersion when it comes to vinyl. The double disc CD’s arrive with a booklet contributed by Danny Sugerman (the band’s second manager and writer of several books on Morrison and The Doors, including “No One Here Gets Out Alive”) regarding the the band’s origins, influences on the band in general, along with a peek into the personality of Jim Morrison. These writings have been printed on the inside of the vinyl’s gatefold, where a missed opportunity for an incisive large formatted discussion could have been included, something that would have made the records more noteworthy. As I suggested earlier, this is an assemblage of what one might consider the singles, and while that’s the premises of nearly all compilations, it would have been nice to have had a few of the more rare brilliant tracks, numbers that would have allowed this collection to blossom and shine as more than the drugged out overrated hippie songs we’ve all grown to know and love … after all “You’re Lost Little Girl,” the haunting “Hyacinth House” or “I Can’t See Your Face In My Mind,” along with a number of others, have been conspicuously overlooked for some reason.Nevertheless, it’s still a fine edition that presents the material most people are interested in, and will certainly bring back some memories of what when into making The Doors so great. So have some fun here, don’t go taking this all so seriously.Review by Jenell Kesler
