Sylvaine: As Atoms Aligned, Coming Undone actually drew some inspiration from the outer world for once, as opposed to my usual audio diary/purely introvert approach, there’s definitely a certain critique of how our human society is working these days, or rather not working. It’s perhaps a cry for help, in the sense of asking people to open their eyes and take in reality as it currently stands. Sylvaine’s new album, Atoms Aligned, Coming Undone, is out November 2nd on Season of Mist.

Atoms Aligned, Coming Undone is the definite statement of Sylvaine’s musical talent. The album is a step up in brooding darkness and atmosphere compared to the previous ones. I daresay a turn for the better. Compositionally speaking, I have rarely seen an album this well made, while refraining from becoming constructed and sterile. Now on her third album, Atoms Aligned, Coming Undone looks to lock in Shepard’s position upon the top of the ambient metal pantheon. And right off the bat, instead of going with a shimmery vocal melody or a wispy guitar line, we are instead given a simple-yet-driving bassline to open up things on the title track. Speaking of, somehow Sylvaine‘s voice sounds stronger than she’s ever been, which is impressive considering that she possesses one of the most angelic voices I’ve heard in metal. That said, her growls and rasps needed work in the past.

Every aspect of Atoms Aligned, Coming Undone appears amplified in comparison to Sylvaine’s previous two albums. Sylvaine’s ethereal and ambient elements havenever faltered before, and nor do they on this album. In keeping with the sense of duality this album resonates, her clean vocals are more than blindingly radiant but also heart-breaking and bitterly nostalgic. On the other, darker end of the scale, rough guitars that snarled at the sight of adversity now bite and tear at its opponent while her improved harsh vocals mimic a similar attitude.
