Part 01 ‎(LP, Album). Part One" remains one of the best debuts in the Rephlex catalogue. It's like "Selected Ambient Works 85-92" on acid or a journey into space, sometimes disturbed by turbulences. Though Astrobotnia, wisely, shows delicacy with the opener to Part One, "Lightworks". Emerging from the far distance, echoed crackles and faint explosions of fireworks provoke giggles from children. Astrobotnia deftly morphs these firework sounds into a fragile but complex series of beats, which he binds together with a shimmering belt. It's quite the most gorgeous opening track I've heard all year. Part Three returns to the expansive headspace of Part One, albeit with a more malevolent undertow. Here, the elements that make Part One so lush and celebratory are curiously corrupted. B" bears the same Metalheadz rhythms as "Track One" of Part Two but underpins them with searing blasts of distortion and clangs of spacejunk. Acidophilus II" is the abrasive sibling to the "Acidphilus" of Part One; its 303 squiggle is downright menacing.

When Rephlex Records first hit the scene in the early '90s, the albums had vague labels and little (if any) liner notes, featuring green covers and a coveted "certain sound" - a low-profile, mid-budget, high-concept, irreverent science fiction "braindance" with a cryptic logo and a commitment to staying fiercely independent. Astrobotnia - Part 01 (Rephlex Records). One of my favourite releases on the Rephlex label, this has a little bit of most of the styles of electronic music i like, eg electro, acid, ambient, etc, and the combination of them all at once. I had part 2 as well but it seems to have disappeared. I may have flogged it. I remember it not being as good as this or part 3 (which i have on CD). I strongly recommend this to fans of the label or its grinning Cornish master. Real shame the label is no more as it was a mine of genius electronica.
