Straight Up is the third album by British rock band Badfinger, released in December 1971 in the United States and February 1972 in Britain. Issued on the Beatles' Apple record label, it includes the hit singles "Day After Day" and "Baby Blue", and the similarly popular "Name of the Game", all of which were written by singer and guitarist Pete Ham. The album marked a departure from the more rock-oriented sound of Badfinger's previous releases, partly as a result of intervention by Apple Records regarding the band's musical direction. Rejected recordings with Geoff Emerick. Sessions with George Harrison and the Concert for Bangladesh. Sessions with Todd Rundgren and album completion.

Straight Up winds up somewhat less dynamic than No Dice, largely because that record alternated its rockers, pop tunes, and ballads. Consequently, the record sounds more unified than No Dice, which had a bit of a split personality. Frankly, the increased production is for the best, since Badfinger sounds best when there's as much craft in the production as there is in the writing. Here, there's absolutely no filler and everybody is in top form. Pete Ham's "Baby Blue" is textbook power-pop - irresistibly catchy fuzz riffs and sighing melodies - and with its Harrison-esque slide guitars, "Day After Day" is so gorgeous it practically aches. Perfection" is an unheralded gem, while "Name of the Game" and "Take It All" are note-perfect pop ballads.

The power pop album of all time. But up until the 1990's few knew of it's brilliance or even it's existence. Badfinger was wiped off the map. Slowly as the CD era developed, so did awareness of the band and in 1993 Straight Up was issued w/6 of the most legendary recordings ever made: the George Martin/Abbey Road orchestral Badfinger sessions. VH1 released a "Behind the Music" on the band and the world learned of their sad fate. They also started buying their records. This one is a hit factory that was burned to the ground. It features Day After Day and Baby Blue. No Matter What is on a previous LP. All the other tracks are as strong on this incredible album. Must own. N

The bass on this way to high on my copy. Anyone else? Maybe even on the cd reissue?

This is great edition of the album! Sound, content, packaging all excellent.

This is a great sounding version of this LP. Having the bonus tracks on a second disc at 45 rpm is a treat. All the liner notes and pics from the CD are included inside the glossy gatefold sleeve. Apparently all the early to mid 90's Badfinger Apple remasters were available this way (2 LP sets), but are quite rare.
Whiteseeker Whiteseeker
Probably Bad Finger's best album. I'm glad that Apple has remastered and reissued their releases from artists other than The Beatles.
Siramath Siramath
Wow very rarely do you see a UK-pressed LP with custom promo labels. Obviously 45s with custom promo labels were the standard, and there were plenty of white label test pressings that were sent out in advance, but typically a promo copy of a UK-pressed LP was merely a regular stock copy with a sticker designating it as a "factory sample" atop one of the (standard) labels.
It's so easy It's so easy
Maybe you’ve speculated how cool it would be to find a “long lost” Beatles album. Maybe from the White / Abbey era, a collection of tunes with their entire trademark for vocal harmony, hooks, and great guitar playing. “Straight Up” could be that album. Apple label or not, the similarities are uncanny. “I’d Die Babe” would actually fit on side b of “Abbey Road” with it’s bouncing guitar groove and Harrisonesqe solo. The brooding piano of “Name of the Grave” sets up a McCartney vibe, “Suitcase” sounds like part two of “Get Back”, etc. etc. Blows the doors off the first Big Star album, can’t believe I didn’t get into this during my power-pop obsessed college years. Turns out this thing was produced by George Harrison – go figure.
Gaeuney Gaeuney
Awesome album indeed. Two comments or one and an opinion. Harrison only produced four songs on the album and pulled out during the album sessions, with Todd Rundgren stepping in to finish the job. The opinion - Straight Up is a fantastic album, but #1 record edges it out in my collection, the slightly superior album of the two.
superstar superstar
They said when Badfinger first joined Apple, the engineers HAD to look through the glass to be sure that it WASN'T The Beatles sneaking in and recording under another name.
