Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo is a 1944 American war film released by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. It is based on the historic Doolittle Raid, America's first retaliatory air strike against Japan four months after the December 1941 Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Mervyn LeRoy directed Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo and Sam Zimbalist produced the film. The screenplay by Dalton Trumbo was based on the 1943 book of the same name, by Captain Ted W. Lawson, a pilot on the raid.

The Doolitte Raid dropped bombs on Tokyo in retaliation for the Japanese bombing Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. On August 6th and 9th 1945, the US dropped 2 atomic bombs onto Japan which caused just over 200,000 people dead and many more scared from life. The 2 cities which the atomic bombs were dropped on were Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Tokyo was the target of a massive bomb run on the evening of March 10, 1945. Although the battle for Iwo Jima was not-yet over, the Allies had enough control of the island to use its air bases. The plan was to send-in the planes at night, when Japanese home-island forces would not be expecting a raid. The planes would fly low - very low - between 5,000 to 8,000 feet. LeMay wanted his air crews to sweep their intended targets - including large areas of Tokyo - with incendiary bombs. Spreading fires would help to cripple the city and its war-making efforts.
