At its best, Astrological Straits is a mashup of Liars tribalism, Boredoms bombast, Smell-scene art-punk, Lightning Bolt repeti-grooves, and Frank Zappa prog-overload. All this sonic hyperactivity can be exhausting, and Hill's fondness for effects, especially in his Vocoder-ish vocals, makes some tracks robotic, more like exercises than songs. Even when Hill makes questionable moves, like blurting clichés on opener "Iambic Strays" ("That's my name/ Don't wear it out") or ending with an indulgent prog-metal blast featuring Primus' Les Claypool on bass, his music exudes a geeky charm. And his final gambit, a bonus one-track disc, is a total winner.
Zach Hill – Astrological Straits. Label: Anticon – ABR0086. A really great experimental album. It is definitely not Zach Hill's best, but it is great nonetheless. I am quite disappointed in my physical copy, which has very noticeable surface noise in certain tracks, including "Dart Art", which seems to have some odd lack of clarity and cymbal reverb that is definitely not in the digital version. I'm fairly certain that the newer copies of this album are not originals and I am assuming that this is why the master sounds poor at some points. Many tracks are fine though.

Album Astrological Straits. Astrological Straits Lyrics. When they got back they could breathe underwater From racing the black cat and letting it win They summoned the moon from the sky into the apartment And frequented tunnels that don't have an end. How low can this really know? How slow can this all go? How fast can the grass grow? How far out did you wanna go? It cut my throat on the curve of the earth Took me apart, see how it works Out in the era with eyes in the back of its head Back on the ground, can't remember what they said.
