Album including Album cover Booklet (PDF). Formats & Prices. Wilhelm Furtwängler conducted Beethoven's Ninth Symphony more than a hundred times. In August 1954, three months before his death, he directed his last performance in Lucerne which proved to be an 'elemental musical event' (Neue Zürcher Zeitung). For the release of this concert recording as part of the series 'LUCERNE FESTIVAL Historic Performances', the original tapes from the archives of SRF Swiss Radio and Television have been newly re-mastered. The pitch has been adjusted anew so that the recording, for the first time, sounds as close to the original as possible - closer than ever before. HighRes-Studio Master files are lossless at various sample rates from 4. kHz up to 384 kHz or 1-bit (. 224 MHz) for DSD. Studio Master: FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec).

Beethoven Nine Ode to Joy. Dates. When Haydn’s final symphony premiered in 1795, his audience heard something grand, impressive and very noisy, the work of the most famous composer of the day – more famous even than Beethoven. Jump forward three decades and it was Beethoven who was impressing audiences with a symphony that was grander, more impressive and, with full orchestra and choir, even noisier.

Generally speaking, the best Beethoven performances come somewhere in the middle that bypasses questions of tempo and note-length and go straight to the content. When one speaks of Furtwangler’s many, many radio performances of Beethoven 9, there are usually three of his at least nine (maybe 12 I thin. recordings which come up before the others. For me, greatest of them all is the so called ‘Hitler 9th’ which was supposedly recorded live in Hitler’s presence (a thesis which was completely disproven).
