Second album from Robert Pollard and former Guided by Voices bassist Chris Slusarenko is remarkably consistent for a post-GbV side project; guests include Stephen Malkmus and Tad Doyle. Despite having former Quasi, Mudhoney, and Guided by Voices members among their numbers, The Takeovers' first record Turn to Red was a little lost in the deluge of Robert Pollard's post-GbV material. It had something to do with the hit-or-miss ratio of its tunes, of course, but it didn't help that Pollard released it with two other albums on the same day. We're hearing even less noise about the band's second record, despite the added support of Stephen Malkmus and members of the Decemberists and Tad Doyle this time out.

To say that The Takeovers' latest offering, Bad Football, is the most consistent side project release from Robert Pollard in a long while - perhaps since Go Back Snowball - is probably more of a testament to his other projects' shortcomings than to the strengths of this album, his second collaboration with former GBV bassist Chris Slusarenko. Because this album is stuck in a limbo between the more consistent pop of Pollard's solo work and the ADD-pop of his many-monikered other projects
