Rilling himself matches his German colleague in giving dramatic life to a work that can all too easily ramble episodically. His own Stuttgart choir, such a revered group, and the Czech forces partnering them make certain that their conviction comes across to us boldly. Each section is firmly integrated into the whole even if the Philips set offers the greater clarity in being, by a small margin, more immediately recorded.

Mendelssohn's Op 42 setting of Psalm 42, composed in 1837, uses choir and soprano solo in an impassioned manner that somehow anticipates Brahms, while the all-choral, pictorially vivid Psalm 114 (1839) is equally good. A little earlier, in 1830, Mendelssohn emulated his hero, Bach, in the structure of Psalm 115 (Op 31), with a powerful opening double fugue, a beautifully conceived duo for tenor and alto, with chorus, and a solo for baritone.
