25 - Trois nouvelles études Op. Posthume, Louis Lortie, piano. If, as it has been said, a pianist who can play Chopin's etudes can play anything, then Lortie can play anything. Having conquered all of the technical difficulties of these pieces, he plays each one as a miniature tone poem, aiming for the maximum of musical expression without any seeming interest in technical display. Since then I have acquired a number of worthy Etudes discs, including Ohlsson's in his complete Chopin cycle, Ashkenazy's, Vasary's, and those of Szekely and Berezovsky, plus countless performances of selected Chopin Etudes by many of the masters. Lortie's performance holds its own with any of them. For my taste it may well be the best blend of technical fireworks and careful musicianship. A little refinement is not amiss in these works of a composer in whom French blood ran alongside Polish.
