To this day, "The Immaculate Collection" remains Madonna's biggest selling album worldwide, with over 10 million sold in the . and another 12 million outside America. Spanning 1983 through 1990, the set collects 15 of Madonna's biggest singles, along with two new tracks: "Justify My Love" and "Rescue M. In fact, Madonna had so many hits during the '80s, there simply was not enough room on the album for all of her big singles. Even top five singles like "Dress You Up" and "Who's That Girl" couldn't be squeezed onto.
American singer Madonna has released 14 studio albums, three soundtrack albums, five live albums, six compilation albums, and 35 other limited releases. In 1982, Madonna signed a recording contract with Sire Records, a label owned by Warner Bros. The first release under the label was her self-titled debut album, Madonna (1983). It peaked at number eight on the Billboard 200 and was certified five-time platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
The Immaculate Collection is the first greatest hits album by American singer and songwriter Madonna. It was released on November 9, 1990, by Sire and Warner Bros. Justify My Love", the album's first single, became Madonna's ninth number-one hit on the Billboard Hot 100 and was one of her most controversial singles due to its sexually explicit music video. Rescue Me" was released as the second single and became the highest-debuting single on Hot 100 by a female artist at that time, entering the chart at number fifteen and peaking at number nine. It became Madonna's second album to be certified diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America for shipment of over ten million copies across the United States.
