Description

The tenor Julian Prégardien joins Alpha for several recording projects that will showcase every facet of his talent, notably lieder and oratorio. His first album on the label is devoted to one of the greatest masterpieces in the history of music, Winterreise, but in a version with orchestra composed by Hans Zender in 1993. He scored the work for orchestral forces very different from the ensembles used in the nineteenth century (including, for example, a soprano saxophone, an accordion, a harmonica, a wind machine, a guitar and a very large percussion section)

Prégardien/Deutsche Radio Philharmonie/Reimer Alpha. Hans Zender’s 1993 work is a composed interpretation of Schubert, intended to be seen as well as heard, and it has been staged several times – Ian Bostridge and director Netia Jones brought their touring production to the Barbican two years ago. But here it’s a fascinating experience in audio alone, thanks to a tensely atmospheric performance by German tenor Julian Prégardien and the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie, conducted by Robert Reimer and recorded live in Saarbrücken.

Zender: Schubert's Winterreise. Reimer, Deutsche Radio Philharmonie Saarbrücken Kaiserslautern, Prégardien. But Julian Prégardien brings something decisive of his own to the music: youthfulness. The narrator's journey through Schubert and Zender's winter landscape is fare more hurried and less polished than his father's version from twenty years ago. While his father brought out the lyrical side of the music, this version brings the delirious, sombre atmosphere to the fore. Both recordings have their own unique perspective on the work. The only drawback is that the German Radio Philharmonic is far too smooth and polished for Zender's distortions and convulsions. Julian Prégardien (tenor). Deutsche Radio Philharmonie, Robert Reimer.
