Venusian Summer Remastered Remastered Wounded Bird Records 2017. Sort: Recent best-seller Results cached. Lenny White is the drummer who played on the seminal album by Miles Davis, "Bitches Brew", and also played on the most excellent, musically better than "Bitches Brew" in my opinion, "Red Clay" by Freddie Hubbard. He also performed on Eddie Henderson's masterpiece, and I believe one of the greatest albums in JRF, "Realization" (which is what initially drew me to explore Lenny White albums).

This is simply one of the most incredible fusion albums I have ever heard! I thought Mahavishnu Orchestra went out of their way with break-neck fast playing, what until you get a load of this album! "Chicken Fried Steak" and "Away Go Troubles Down the Drain" (obvious reference to Roto-Rooter, and their ad campaign) are simply great examples of funk fusion, but then the album really goes into some real unexpected surprised. "Venusian Summer Suite", for example, starts off rather spacy, with spacy synthesizers, before the second part goes in fusion overdrive. I really find those synth solos just amazing. "Prelude to the Rainbow Delta" is another short spacy ambient number, that leads to the unbelievably intense "Mating Drive". It's like Mahavishnu Orchestra on steroids (and that's obviously saying a lot given how fast Mahavishnu played). Super fast drumming from Lenny himself, with unbelievably fast guitar playing from Ray Gomez (I wouldn't doubt if John McLaughlin was a mentor). It only makes sense the last piece, "Prince of the Sea" would be a calmer piece, but clearly fusion, guitar playing from both Larry Coryell and Al DiMeola, Lenny's Return to Forever bandmate. I really can't believe what I'm heard, I really love how he and the musicians helping out would do some unexpected things like go into spacy electronic territory as well as go into fusion overdrive. One often is suspicious of a drummer's solo album (unless you happened to be Phil Collins, Don Henley, or Ringo Starr, since they could sing, and write and record pop hits), because you fear it's just the drummer stroking his ego, but Lenny White realized that the rest of the musicians helping out matter just as much, especially if you're a drummer that don't sing (Bill Bruford and Billy Cobham also knew that quite well). Listening to Venusian Summer, you can see why Miles Davis included him on Bitches Brew, and then later on Chick Corea with Return to Forever. For anyone into fusion, Venusian Summer is an absolute must.

This LP is one of the examples where the original LP in good condition sounds better than the CD re.I have the US Nemperor pressing and the Wounded Bird CD RE.That aside this record,as one of the top jazz-rock recordings of the seventies is in dire need of a careful remastered CD RE or a new pressing on vinyl.
