Gruntz's band took an even- handed approach to the two qualifying words in its title: some of its pieces were played as jazz, some were non-jazz concert pieces usually based on folk themes. All of them were written or adapted by members of the orchestra and arranged by Mr. Gruntz. Mr. Gruntz not only took advantage of the group of heavy, dark-toned horns in his orchestra - three trombones, including a bass trombone, three French horns and a tuba - but of the virtuoso musicians who were playing them. Both the concert and the band had such variety and color that it deserved better display at the festival than as an afterthought at this small recital hall, which was filled.
