This album is composed entirely of acoustic guitar. The music is surprisingly evocative considering how sparse it is in terms of bells and whistles. Boyd Chubbs is primarily a painter/illustrator, so it seems almost unfair, that he could be this talented a guitar player as well. As soon as the first track begins, rich landscapes unravel before the listener, taking them on a journey to uncharted, but strangely nostalgic realms. Some people may find the album a little monotonous, as the style is fairly consistent, and one should probably be, at least reasonably fond of, complex musical compositions on acoustic guitar in order to appreciate this album, but the sophistication of the arrangements and the skill of the performer are unquestionable, and elevate this, otherwise simple, creation way beyond the genre of instrumental albums. This music would be most appropriate for (fittingly enough) listening to while painting, or engaging in some contemplative creative exercise. The songs are just peppy enough, (including many jigs and reels) to be not quite right for putting the listener to sleep, or relaxing them, but still have an evocative dreamy quality. To some extent the music is primary influenced by Celtic Folk music, but many of the pieces are also evocative of Spanish guitar. The style of fingering is somewhat particular to the Maritimes where an established tradition of solo guitar music is in place. Songs of particular interest are the title track, which is quite haunting and remains fixed in the listener's mind, A Raven Flies In A Cobalt Sun, Deep Water Creek, and I Turn My Head Beneath My Wings and Sleep, for sheer compositional genius.
