The Queen Is Dead is the third studio album by English rock band the Smiths. It was released on 16 June 1986 in the United Kingdom by Rough Trade Records, and in the United States on 23 June 1986 through Sire Records. The album spent twenty-two weeks on the UK Albums Chart, peaking at No. 2. It also reached No. 70 on the US Billboard 200 chart, and was certified Gold by the RIAA in late 1990

This year’s Day of the Dead is a new 5xCD, compilation produced by the National’s Bryce and Aaron Dessner as a benefit for the Red Hot organization. With a cast of dozens drawn from a cross-section of indie-ish musical worlds, the set, like its MTV predecessor, signals another milestone in the San Francisco band’s profound influence on American music, closing old circles and opening new ones. In this way and others, the Dessner brothers find different ways to interpret the Dead, in micro and macro, letting artists stand in for the band’s various sides. During the set’s approximated jam sequences on the second and third discs (Lighting and Sunshine, respectively), the Dead’s weirdness shines through, including a father/son space-dub jam-out by Terry and Gyan Riley on a near total reconstruction of Bob Weir’s Estimated Prophet (yes, that Terry Riley).

Loaded with 24 short tracks and one longer one, the French quartet is out to unleash violence in the early course of 2013. As a Blockheads record, anyone can expect the type of music the band plays best in This World Is Dead: Fast and furious grindcore that will send listeners swinging their limbs like a complete maniac. On the other hand, deathly grindcore is not all This World Is Dead specializes in. There are plenty of unique perks that Blockheads holds outside of the act’s usual normal raw grindcore mold.

Organized by the French music magazine Les Inrockuptibles, The Smiths is Dead, a song-by-song recreation of the Smiths' masterpiece The Queen is Dead, seems to throw a curveball to the traditional tribute album by limiting its scope, but that isn't quite the case. The record is as maddeningly uneven as any other tribute album, but what distinguishes The Smiths Is Dead is the number of bands wanting to completely deconstruct the Smiths. Some, like the Boo Radleys, who make the title track into a weird trip-hop and dub excursion, do it with respect, but many just want to tear the band.
