Hoss is Lagwagon's third album, released on November 21, 1995 by Fat Wreck Chords. It was produced by Ryan Greene. This is the last Lagwagon album to feature guitarist Shaun Dewey before his departure in 1997 and drummer Derrick Plourde before his death in 2005. They would be replaced temporarily by Ken Stringfellow (The Posies) on guitar, and permanently by Dave Raun (RKL) on drums.

Jack of Clubs is the second album by Paul Motian to be released on the Italian Soul Note label. It seems that the maturity level of Lagwagon increased dramatically after the release of their second album, Trashed. On Hoss, there are no butchered covers, nor are there any half-hearted attempts to bring out the happier side of the rock & roll lifestyle. This is a good thing, though; Lagwagon have a "take no slack" mentality without coming across as macho tough guys.
